Chapter Eight

Anna saw that the group was still chatting. Apparently, the conversation continued just fine without her. Irritatingly, the only person who seemed to have even noticed her absence was Louise. Anna caught Louise watching from across the room as she tried to sneak unnoticed toward her original corner of the bar and away from the group. Guiltily, she looked away, but not before seeing that facade of happiness from earlier lift from Louise’s face for a moment—Anna could see she was struggling. This bothered her. Still, she kept moving, reminding herself that whatever Louise was feeling was not her fault. By some miracle, Anna found her original stool by the bar was still empty. She settled back onto it with an almost affectionate familiarity and looked around for George. He was helping a group of women she thought she recognized from the class above as they tried to decide on their next shot.

“We just want something fun!” a woman explained with a slight slur.

The cluster of expectant faces around her nodded in agreement.

“Hmm.” George looked thoughtful and then smiled.

“I can do a blow job, how about that?”

Anna snorted. The women looked at him with confusion. George held up his finger and started mixing the ridiculous concoction of amaretto, Irish cream, and whipped cream.

The shot was truly disgusting.

“But here’s the deal…” George said. “You can’t use your hands. You have to take it straight from the table with your mouth.”

Finally catching on, the women started laughing and sealed their assent with an eager, “Wooo!”

As they lined up, ready to deep throat a shot glass, George slid over toward Anna.

“It’s got like zero percent alcohol,” he said with a sigh.

George clearly read his crowd well on that one and his salesmanship had not faltered. Still, Anna saw that his smile wasn’t quite reaching his eyes.

“I see you made it into the ‘in crowd,’” he continued.

“Yeah, that was an experience…”

“Awkward?”

“You have no idea.” Anna glanced back toward the group. Gina seemed to have recovered well from her revelation since she was now laughing easily with Jessica and Josh. She noticed Anna looking and gave her a small smile, pushing her hair behind her ear. Anna turned back toward the bar to find George staring at her, and very accusatorially in Anna’s opinion.

“What?” she asked defensively.

“So, you’re not even going to admit there’s something going on with you and Gina?”

“Oh my God, are you like a psychic or something? How do you even know about that?”

“Honey, please. One, she has been shooting you flirty looks like that all night. Two, when I told her I hung out with you the other night, she was over at the bar with Josh earlier asking me intense questions about ‘how long you’re going to be here’ and ‘if you’re seeing anybody.’ And if that wasn’t enough—and just to be clear, it is—I’m pretty sure I saw her at a Tegan and Sara concert in 2009.” George looked at Anna knowingly. “Now it’s your turn to speak. “

Anna put her head down on the bar and let out a frustrated moan.
